NETGEAR Extends Reach into the Wi-Fi Market and Broadens T-Mobile’s Support of 802.11b Platforms
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — November 4, 2002 — NETGEAR, Inc., a worldwide provider of easy-to-use, high performance networking products at prices affordable to homes and growing businesses, announced today that T-Mobile, one of the leading innovators in Wi-Fi (802.11b) operating the largest wireless broadband network in the world, will offer NETGEAR’s 802.11b (MA401) wireless PC card in select retail stores nationwide.
This announcement extends NETGEAR’s reach into the growing Wi-Fi market, enabling students, traveling professionals and other mobile workers to gain broadband Internet access from more than 1,800 public locations offering the T-Mobile HotSpot™ service.
"Our goal is ubiquity in mobility," said NETGEAR Chairman and CEO, Patrick Lo. "We want our Wi-Fi cards to enable customers to get the easiest access to the best wireless broadband service available. Our agreement with T-Mobile, which allows us to leverage the quality of its Wi-Fi service, the strength of its retail channel, and the wide availability of the T-Mobile HotSpot service, takes us one step closer to that goal."
"NETGEAR’s 802.11b cards are known in the market for their high performance, reliability and cost-effectiveness," said Juan Posada, senior product manager for T-Mobile. "They were the obvious choice for our retail stores where we wanted to offer our customers the convenience of purchasing a Wi-Fi card and the T-Mobile HotSpot service bundled together at an attractive price. We are very pleased to be working with NETGEAR."
NETGEAR cards will include T-Mobile HotSpot subscription information in their packaging. To access the T-Mobile HotSpot service, users simply need to, insert a NETGEAR card into their laptop and enter ‘tmobile’ as their network name (SSID), and sign on to the service.
T-Mobile operates the largest GSM/GPRS voice and high speed data network in the country, covering over 200 million people and the world’s largest ‘Wi-Fi’ (802.11b) wireless broadband, (WLAN) network, serving more than 1,800 public locations. NETGEAR/T-Mobile user Alison Keiller, a consultant who travels frequently, substantiates this trend, citing convenience as a driver for Wi-Fi adoption. "I never thought I could be this efficient while away from my desk. The NETGEAR card and the T-Mobile HotSpot service work together flawlessly. And it’s very easy to find a Starbucks, power on my laptop and work while I enjoy my coffee. I love having the option to work from the comfort of any Starbucks on the road."
Market research firm InStat/MDR predicts growing use of Wi-Fi, forecasting that approximately 100 million users worldwide will be using Wi-Fi by 2006. For more information or to sign up for the T-Mobile HotSpot service, visit www.t-mobile.com.
